NFL Rumors: Bears trading for Jimmy Garoppolo is top priority

The Chicago Bears will make an effort to trade for New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo but what will the price be and what happens to Jay Cutler?

The Chicago Bears have quarterback problems with Jay Cutler likely to be traded or released and general manager Ryan Pace has his sights set on acquiring Tom Brady’s backup with the New England Patriots, Jimmy Garoppolo.

This comes from CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora who reports the Bears will make a strong concerted effort to trade for him as he is their biggest offseason priority. Garoppolo has long been rumored to be dealt with Brady showing no signs of slowing down and teams like the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers are also viewed as the teams considering making a trade for him.

Acquiring Garoppolo won’t come cheap but La Canfora reports league executives don’t believe the Patriots will be able to pry a first round pick away from a team. The Browns, 49ers, Bears and Jets are picking in the top six of the 2017 NFL Draft, so they won’t give up that much for Garoppolo, but La Canfora thinks a package of multiple second round picks could be enough to consummate a trade.

Garoppolo was a second round pick out of Eastern Illinois, where Pace also played his college football. With Pace and head coach John Fox coaching for their jobs in 2017, they recognize they have to show significant signs of improvement after two dismal seasons and acquiring a quarterback with the potential of Garoppolo could go a long way in making a push for respectability.

With the free agent market lacking any impact performers and the incoming draft prospects not providing much in the way of a sure-fire starter, the Bears best bet may be forgoing some draft picks in the second round to get the next guy who is supposed to be the answer to the Bears quarterback woes.

Bears fans, would you be okay with giving up a second round pick this year and next year for Garoppolo?
