A stunning report published Wednesday revealed that during the final days of former President Barack Obama’s administration, a number of top officials worked to undermine the upcoming presidency of then-President-elect Donald Trump.They did so by actively dispersing classified intelligence regarding communications and meetings between Russian officials and the president-elect’s associates.
“At intelligence agencies, there was a push to process as much raw intelligence as possible into analyses, and to keep the reports at a relatively low classification level to ensure as wide a readership as possible across the government,” reported The New York Times.
This was the same intelligence that helped bring down former National Security Adviser Michael T. Flynn, who resigned from his post last month after it was revealed he had mislead key White House officials about the nature of his communications with Russian diplomats.
This was also the same information that recently spurred a new scandal surrounding Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has been accused of having first met with a top Russian diplomat in Washington last year and then later failed to mention the meetings during his confirmation hearings earlier this year.
According to the Times, officials in the Obama administration pursued an opposite approach for “the most sensitive intelligence.”
