Edward Snowden has risked everything in his fight against the deep state, and he just showed that he is not done yet.
A whirlwind of controversy erupted yesterday after NSA Director Mike Rogers and FBI Director James Comey testified before those on the House Intelligence Committee. Republican congressmen, concerned about the frequent leaks from the intelligence community to the press, questioned the men on who has access to the information, yet Snowden, a former NSA contractor, noticed the “Shadow State” against Trump is carefully hiding information about who exactly was monitoring and or collecting data on our president.
Red flag: NSA Director careful to discuss only who can unmask USP identities in reporting, not who can access collection involving USPs.

USP refers to US persons, a technical term in intelligence gathering. The anonymity of a US person is protected by law.
Unmasking is another important term. It is unconstitutional to gather intelligence on US persons without a warrant. Occasionally, information about a US person is uncovered during the course of foreign investigations. When this occurs, intelligence gatherers are required to block out or minimize the name.
A US person can be unmasked only if it is essential to the information gathered. For instance, if a US person were found to be colluding with terrorists, their name would be unmasked to aid in the investigation.
Mike Rogers testified that there are around 20 people who can unmask, but that tells only half the story as Snowden astutely observes. Intelligence gatherers would be able to see the identity of US persons during the course of their investigation even if they do not have unmasking powers.
This is important since Michael Flynn’s name was illegally leaked to the press. While only 20 people have the power to unmask, many more would have access to the raw data that mentions Flynn, and any of them could be behind the leak.
Getting to the bottom of how these illegal leaks occurred is essential. One of the NSA’s main spying tools is up for re-authorization later this year. The program cannot be reauthorized if it is being used to facilitate illegal leaks. We have the right to have our identity protected, and the intelligence community has not instilled any faith that they take this duty seriously, as classified information is continuously leaked to the press.
How many communications in which at least one participant is American are held by the NSA? The question not answered in Congress today. https://twitter.com/Snowden/status/843848810199703553 …

Again, Snowden points out how Mike Rogers skirted around the important questions. Our intelligence gathering techniques rely on casting a large net, and many communications including Americans get caught in that net. We need to be certain that the NSA and similar organizations are doing everything in their power to preserve our identities.
These spying programs are of vital importance to our national security, but the agencies need to prove they can handle the responsibilities. If they cannot, then we need to take their toys away.
