Under a sweeping rewrite of immigration enforcement policies announced earlier this week by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, anyone caught illegally crossing into the United States from Mexico will, regardless of where they are originally from, be sent right back to Mexico.
“If present immigration trends continue, that could mean the United States would push hundreds of thousands of Guatemalans, Hondurans, Salvadorans, Brazilians, Ecuadorans, even Haitians into Mexico,” ProPublica reported. “Currently, such people are detained in the U.S. and allowed to request asylum.”
This could very well lead to Mexico being overwhelmed with deportee and refugee camps along its northern border. And as might have been expected, Mexican officials were not pleased.
“We are not going to accept that because we don’t have to and it is not in the interest of Mexico,” Mexico’s foreign relations secretary, Luis Videgaray, said Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.
Oh really? Well, I guess now he knows how the American people feel about hiscitizens protesting U.S. President Donald Trump and his proposals to both crackdown on illegal immigration and construct a border wall.
“Demonstrators in more than a dozen Mexican cities, dressed in white, waved Mexican flags and anti-Trump placards,” the BBC reported earlier this month. “Organizers said they wanted to send a message that Mexico was united against Mr. Trump.”
So it is OK for them to prioritize their national interests but not for Americans to do the same? Sorry, but things don’t work like that.
The fact is that the United States has as much right as any other nation to stand up for its own national interests. And it is not in its interests to allow any random schmuck to cross over into its territory all willy-nilly.
Moreover, if and when someone crosses into the U.S. from a particular country, it makes perfect sense to send that individual back to that country. Conservatives call this logic and common sense. Liberals call it bigotry and blah, blah, blah.
Here is where things get interesting. According to Alejandro Hope, a Mexico City-based security analyst, his nation’s government may be willing to accept this deal, given one stipulation.
“For this to be politically acceptable in Mexico, it would have to be paid,” he said. “No Mexican administration could accept this kind of thing unless it were accompanied by billions of dollars.”
Now we’re talking business, although that’s probably not a deal the Trump administration is likely to accept, either.
The fact is, there is a relatively simple solution that Mexico can and should adopt — enforce its own borders so that illegal immigrants cannot use it as a conduit into the United States.
