In 2013, it was revealed that the Internal Revenue Service had targeted hundreds of conservative groups with names like “tea party” or “patriots” from 2010 to 2012. In 2014, it was learned that the government agency flagged and audited these groups after government watchdog group Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information Act about the scandal.
Now, more than two years after that request was made, the IRS has magically “discovered” almost 7,000 documents regarding the targeting of tea party conservatives, and what they contain might be damning for former President Obama’s administration.
Judicial Watch reported that the IRS announced last week that it had located 6,924 documents that could potentially point to the IRS targeting of conservative groups. These documents are presumably not part of the records contained in the congressional database the IRS created in 2013 to store documents related to congressional inquiries into the scandal.
But the IRS has already admitted targeting American citizens to suppress their First Amendment freedoms of association and speech. These new documents could contain even worse assaults on American freedoms.
In a statement to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the IRS was not willing to commit to a when it would make all of the records public and was vague on how it would release the records at all:
“At this time, the Service is unable to provide an estimate regarding when it will complete its review of the potentially responsive documents. The Service will begin producing any non-exempt, responsive documents by March 10, 2017, and, if necessary, continue to produce non-responsive records on a bi-weekly basis.”
Considering the fact that these documents were demanded years ago, a timeline shouldn’t be allowed.
The Washington Examiner reported that Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said the discovery was a “significant breakthrough.”
“The corruption at the IRS is astounding. Our attorneys knew that there were more records to be searched but the Obama IRS ignored this issue for years,” Litton said. “President Trump needs to clean house at the IRS as quickly as possible.”
We couldn’t agree more.
The timing of this “discovery” is highly suspect. but it also gives the Trump administration an opportunity to highlight how the the Obama administration abused its power.
