Meet the wardrobe wizard behind the first daughter’s distinctive style.
She may have run her own apparel and accessories company in the pre-President Trump era, but Ivanka Trump is getting a fashion helping hand in her new role as a close adviser to her father.
According to sources, the 35-year-old has been working with Cat Williams, a New York-based stylist whose résumé includes a 2.5-year stint with celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger (Meryl Streep, Lupita Nyong’o) until she recently decided to strike out on her own. (A representative for Erlanger confirmed that Williams no longer works for the stylist; Williams herself did not return THR‘s multiple requests for comment.)
Erlanger has also styled Ivanka in the past, according to a 2015 post on Ivanka’s #WomenWhoWork blog; the pair was apparently working together as recently as last May, when Erlanger assisted Ivanka with her Met Gala look.
Though she’s currently a Manhattanite, Williams was educated in Australia, where she received a certificate from the FBI Fashion College as well as a bachelor’s degree from the University of Sydney. Prior to working with Erlanger, she held positions at Vogue Australia and Harper’s Bazaar Australia.
Though it’s unclear how long she and the first daughter have been working together, Ivanka has been steadily upping her fashion profile since moving to Washington, D.C. She regularly posts photos of herself in the West Wing — where it was announced Tuesday she will have an office — documenting her new life in the style of a glossy magazine.
Alongside First Lady Melania Trump, Ivanka has challenged the capital’s fashion status quo by dressing in sleekly conservative, monochrome ensembles by American designers Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta, as well as stiletto heels and pieces from her now defunct high-end jewelry line, Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry.
On more than one occasion, her fashion choices have landed her in hot water on the Twittersphere, most notably when she posted a glamour shot of herself posing in a silvery evening gown on the same day President Trump announced a controversial new immigration policy that prompted protests in the streets.
When First Lady Michelle Obama was in the White House, her fashion choices were much-imitated, including her signature cardigans, full skirts and kitten heels. Early on, she worked with Chicago retailer Ikram Goldman on her wardrobe, and in 2009, Meredith Koop, a former sales associate at Ikram’s boutique, started working with Obama on her wardrobe strategy.
Herve Pierre, the designer behind Melania’s sculptural white, off-the-shoulder inauguration gown, and the former creative director at Carolina Herrera, has reportedly been helping First Lady Trump with her wardrobe choices.
