The New York Giants and defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul agreed on a new contract Friday. Pierre-Paul announced the deal:
Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com initially reported the news. The deal will be for four years, per Rapoport:
Ian Rapoport✔@RapSheet#Giants pass-rusher Jason Pierre-Paul signed a 4-year contract worth $62M base – up $66M – with $40M guaranteed, source said. Big-time
Rapoport added that the contract has a $20 million signing bonus and said the defensive end will earn $34 million in the first 11 months and a total of $49.5 million in the first three years.
It has been an interesting few years in the relationship between Pierre-Paul and the Giants. The talented defensive end suffered an offseason hand injury following a fireworks accident in 2015 and appeared in just eight games for the Giants that year, registering a solitary sack.
He signed a one-year deal with the Giants before the 2016 season and played well, totaling 53 tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 12 games. The Giants responded by placing the franchise tag on him this winter to keep him from hitting the open market before the two sides were able to agree on a new deal.
A new deal is crucial, as Pierre-Paul said in January he wouldn’t play on a one-year deal, per Mike Garafolo of NFL.com:
Albert Breer✔@AlbertBreeriants always put big value on pass-rushers. Shows in how they draft, who they pay. ’16: -> Olivier Vernon; ’17: -> Jason Pierre-Paul.
The Giants are once again set to compete for an NFC East title and a postseason berth. Losing Pierre-Paul would have put a damper on those plans. Instead, the Giants will have their star defensive end back in the fold.
