In early January, a disturbing piece of footage was posted on Facebook Live depicting four black thugs in Chicago torturing a white, mentally disabled teenager as they shouted things like “f*ck Donald Trump” and “f*ck white people.”
The four have remained in custody since then on numerous charges including aggravated kidnapping and committing a hate crime. On Friday, they appeared in court to enter their pleas, and what they did there may shock you.
CNN reported that the four defendants each plead not guilty to the charges against them. This came as a surprise to the thousands of people who watched the gruesome 28-minute Facebook Live video, which appears to serve as evidence of all of their guilt.
Tanishia Covington, 24, Brittany Covington, 18, Jordan Hill, 18, and Tesfaye Cooper, 18, each entered their pleas before Judge William Hook in a Cook County, Illinois courtroom.
After their initial hearing last month in which they were denied bail, Amy Campanelli, who is defending one of the thugs, blasted the “sensationalized, pervasive media coverage” of the case that she said tainted the jury pool.
“It is sad and unfortunate that many have commented on these young men and women without knowing all the facts,” she said after a hearing. “They have been denounced in the media before anything has been proven.”
