Trump’s war on immigrants has had so many victims so early into his administration. From a woman being deported at the courthouse after reporting domestic abuse to yanking another woman out of the hospital while she was awaiting treatment for a brain tumor, Trump is creating the kind of discord with unauthorized immigrants that will only hinder the ability of officers to properly police the communities they are so charged with protecting. Now, Mexico is making a stand.
Not only are the implications of the difficulties faced by local police a complete debunking of Trump’s claim that he would be the “law and order” candidate; but the possible human rights and international laws violated by the Trump administration by denying those huddled masses from other nations fearing for their lives are an affront to American values.
Now, many would think that seeking asylum might only apply refugees from war-torn parts of the world, but many fleeing the nations to the south of the U.S are doing so in fear of their lives as bodies continue to pile up from cartel violence. In order to seek asylum one has only to display a reasonable fear for one’s life due to one of five factors: race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
Fearing cartel violence could certainly fall under political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Especially if that particular social group isn’t affiliated with a rival cartel.
Now Mexico is making a stand against the Trump administration’s harmful immigration policies and launching a 50 million dollar campaign to offer legal defense for Mexican immigrants fearing Trump’s policies.
“What changes today is that we are prioritizing legal matters over everything. Previously, we didn’t have the need to seek so much legal support for our people,” Miami’s Mexican consul general, Jose Antonio Zabalgoitia said. “But now, we need to protect them against an eventual deportation.”
Zabalgoitia claimed an increase in requests for documents and help has been “enormous”. “I used to sign two birth certificates a week. Only yesterday, I signed 15,” he said.
According to the report from the Associated Press:
“All 50 Mexican consulates in the U.S. on Friday launched legal assistance centers to form partnerships with nonprofit groups and tap lawyers to help those fearing Trump’s policies.”
“The diplomatic effort comes as the two countries are in a rift over Trump’s plans for a border wall. While Trump says Mexico will pay for it one way or another, Mexico says it won’t. It was also unveiled less than two weeks after new guidelines came out aimed at aggressively detaining and deporting immigrants by increasing the number of federal agents and strengthening cooperation with local law enforcement.”
So it looks like Mexico is not paying for Trump’s imbecilic wall but they are paying to be a persistent thorn in the Bigot in Chief’s side. Resist,
