Donald Trump cannot seem to catch a break when trying to get his cabinet nominations confirmed.
Fast food executive Andrew Puzder is Trump’s pick for Secretary of Labor, and one of the last Cabinet nominations to get a confirmation hearing. Puzder’s hearing is finally scheduled for Thursday.
However, four Republican senators have told GOP leadership they will not support Trump’s choice for labor secretary. Now, according to sources, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and business groups are trying desperately to bring at least two back into the fold so that the nomination does not fail.
GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Tim Scott of South Carolina and Johnny Isakson of Georgia all refuse to support Trump’s pick.
Republicans, of course, are not counting on any Democratic votes for Puzder. Moreover, Murkowski and Collins were also the two GOP defections on the DeVos vote, and of the four who have voiced reservations about Puzder are viewed as the most difficult to get back in the fold.
According to sources, if at least two of the four opposed Republicans cannot be swayed, McConnell will face the unwelcome task of advising the White House to pull the nomination instead of facing an embarrassing Senate floor defeat.
Collins told CNN:
“I have gone to review the Oprah show for an hour on which his former wife appeared and I’m reviewing the other information that has come to light. I’m sure all of this will explored fully.”
Do you think these members of the Republican party need to grow up and be adults about Trump’s cabinet pick and support the nominees and the party?
