It would seem that there is some unrest on the Republican side of things, and Marco Rubio has just marked himself as a traitor.
Rex Tillerson is Donald Trump’s choice for secretary of state, but Rubio is resisting this choice. He pressed Tillerson to answer tough questions, and when Tillerson refused to denounce behaviors of certain countries, Rubio clearly wasn’t pleased. Rubio may not cast his vote for Tillerson, via CNN.
Rubio’s vote could make a huge difference in Tillerson’s progress because there is only a one vote margin between the Republicans and the Democrats on the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.
However, if Tillerson stalls in the committee, the Senate will go around the panel and bring in the full Senate for a vote.
“This is a very important decision, and I recognize the partisan split on the committee and what it means,” Rubio stated after the hearing. “I’m prepared to do what’s right.” Hopefully, this will be vote for Tillerson.
Marco Rubio, the Florida senator who lost to Trump in the GOP primaries for president, had many heated words for the now president-elect. Now, he has stated that “moral clarity” is important in foreign policy, and he does not believe Tillerson will give the right judgement.
“The position you’ve been nominated to is, in my opinion, the second-most important position of the U.S. government, with all due respect to the vice president,” Rubio stated, obviously doubting Tillerson’s ability in the position.
Rubio doesn’t seem to have any concrete reasons for believing Tillerson will not do a good job. Donald Trump wouldn’t have nominated Tillerson if he thought he would be unsuccessful in the position.
Senator Lindsey Graham is also not sure about Tillerson as the secretary of state, saying, “I think probably what happened today is he is a good man, an honest guy, well qualified in terms of his life experience, but I don’t think he grew the vote today.”
He continued on to say, “I think there are a lot of Democrats that may have been thinking about voting for him are going to have a harder time of it.” Graham thinks that Tillerson did not answer the questions about what he is going to do about the Russian “hacking” allegations.
The fact that he does not want to do anything until given concrete proof is a good thing. In addition, Trump has already addressed this issue and plans on having a sit down with Putin to draw the lines in the sand for the “new” relationship between the two superpowers.
It is actually amazing he is being criticized for wanting to see all the facts before making a decision as important as this.
It seems these two Republicans might just be bitter that Donald Trump came out the victor. Still, it doesn’t help anyone to make Trump’s nominations as difficult as possible. Losing a primary sucks, Rubio, but that is long in the past now!
